National Sustainable Development Plan

The Vanuatu National Sustainable Development Plan (NSDP) sets out a bold vision for 20230 for the future of Vanuatu. Grounded in our rich cultural heritage and deep respect for our environment, this plan charts a course towards sustainable development that empowers all Ni-Vanuatu people, both present, and future generations

A resilient, inclusive, and prosperous Vanuatu, where all citizens enjoy a high quality of life, equitable opportunities, and sustainable development.

To promote sustainable economic growth, social inclusion, environmental protection, and cultural preservation through strategic policies, partnerships, and actions that prioritize the well-being of our people and the integrity of our natural resources.

Key Pillars

  • Economic Resilience and Diversification: Foster a dynamic and resilient economy that promotes entrepreneurship, innovation, and equitable access to economic opportunities. Encourage diversification of economic sectors to reduce dependency on vulnerable industries and enhance resilience to external shocks.
  • Social Inclusion and Human Development: Ensure all citizens have access to quality education, healthcare, and social services. Promote gender equality, empowerment of youth and vulnerable groups, and protection of human rights. Strengthen social cohesion and cultural identity to build a more inclusive society.
  • Environmental Sustainability and Climate Resilience: Safeguard our natural environment, biodiversity, and ecosystems for future generations. Implement measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change, including sustainable land management, conservation of marine resources, and renewable energy development. Promote environmental awareness and sustainable lifestyles.
  • Governance and Institutional Strengthening: Strengthen governance structures, institutions, and systems to enhance transparency, accountability, and effectiveness in public service delivery. Promote good governance principles, rule of law, and civic participation. Foster partnerships between government, civil society, private sector, and development partners.

Strategic Objectives

  1. Promote sustainable agriculture, fisheries, and tourism industries through innovation, value addition, and market access.
  2. Improve access to quality education, vocational training, and healthcare services for all citizens.
  3. Enhance resilience to natural disasters and climate change impacts through infrastructure development, early warning systems, and community-based adaptation measures.
  4. Protect and conserve our natural environment, including forests, oceans, and freshwater resources, through sustainable management practices and protected area networks.
  5. Foster inclusive economic growth and entrepreneurship, particularly among women, youth, and marginalized communities.
  6. Strengthen governance systems, promote anti-corruption measures, and enhance public sector capacity for effective service delivery.
  7. Promote cultural preservation, traditional knowledge, and indigenous rights while embracing modernization and technological advancements.
  8. Foster regional and international cooperation to address transboundary issues, promote trade, and achieve sustainable development goals.

The successful implementation of the Vanuatu National Sustainable Development Plan requires a coordinated effort from all stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, the private sector, development partners, and local communities.
