VBoS Strengthens Population Projection Capacity for Informed Policymaking

The Vanuatu Bureau of Statistics (VBoS) successfully conducted a workshop on the methodology behind the Vanuatu Population Projection for 2024-2050. Held from July 15th to 19th, 2024, the workshop aimed to equip stakeholders with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and utilize population projection techniques for informed policy decisions. The training was conducted by SPC Statistics Adviser (Demography) Yohannes Kinfu.

The comprehensive program provided participants with a thorough grounding in the theoretical and practical aspects of population projection. This included exploring various national projection approaches, data evaluation and adjustment techniques, and in-depth sessions on projecting vital events such as births, deaths, and migration. Interactive tutorials and debriefing sessions with the Chief Statistician and the SPC Melanesian Regional Office ensured a valuable learning experience

Population Projections: A Foundation for Strategic Policy Decisions

Population projections are a critical tool for effective policy development. By offering insights into Vanuatu's future demographic landscape, these projections empower policymakers to proactively plan for essential areas:

  • Education: Anticipated school-aged populations can be used to strategically allocate resources and ensure adequate infrastructure to meet future educational demands.
  • Healthcare: Understanding the projected growth of different age groups, particularly the elderly and young children, allows for informed planning of future healthcare requirements.
  • Infrastructure Development: Population projections inform decisions about future needs for housing, transportation networks, and utility infrastructure development.

Population projections also serve as a proactive mechanism for identifying potential challenges, such as an aging population or rapid urbanization. This foresight allows policymakers to develop solutions and mitigation strategies in advance, fostering a more resilient Vanuatu.
