Project Status

Phase 1: Co-creation & Design

Vanuatu is highly vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters. To improve the country's ability to respond to these threats, the Vanuatu Bureau of Statistics (VBoS) is leading a collaborative project called "Vanuatu Data Science Driving Innovation in Climate Change and Natural Disasters." Funded by the World Bank's Data Innovation Fund, this project brings together VBoS with the Ministry of Climate Change Adaptation (MoCCA) and the Disaster and Safety Pacific Community (DSPPAC).

The project aims to revolutionize Vanuatu's approach to climate change and natural disasters by harnessing the power of data science. Through innovative tools and systems, the project will:

  • Estimate damage and resource needs: following disasters using cutting-edge "Reproducible Analytical Pipelines." This will allow for a quicker and more accurate response to emergencies.
  • Monitor the slow-moving impacts of climate change: like land degradation and coastal erosion with the help of machine learning and satellite imagery. This will enable proactive measures to be taken before problems escalate.
  • Improve data collection and accessibility: through a brand new Management Information System (MIS) with a digital mobile data collection tool. This will ensure timely and high-quality data is available for informed decision-making.

By implementing these innovative solutions, the project will empower Vanuatu to make data-driven decisions when facing climate change and natural disasters. This will ultimately lead to a more resilient and prepared nation.
