Vanuatu MICS 2023 - Survey Findings Report

Port Vila, Vanuatu – July 2024 – The Vanuatu Bureau of Statistics (VBoS) has officially released the Vanuatu Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) 2023 report, providing a wealth of data critical for shaping the nation's policies and programs. Conducted in collaboration with various government ministries and departments, and supported by UNICEF, UNFPA, and the Pacific Community (SPC), this survey offers an in-depth look at the well-being of children, adolescents, women, and households across Vanuatu.

The MICS 2023 report is a cornerstone for monitoring progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other national and international commitments. It includes data on 33 global SDG indicators and 6 additional indicators adopted by Vanuatu's National Sustainable Development Plan 2016-2030 (Vanuatu 2030 The People’s Plan).

The primary objectives of the Vanuatu MICS 2023 include:

  • Providing high-quality data to assess the situation of children, adolescents, women, and households.
  • Furnishing data needed for monitoring progress toward national goals and informing future actions.
  • Collecting disaggregated data to identify disparities and inform policies aimed at social inclusion.
  • Validating data from other sources and focused interventions.
  • Generating internationally comparable data to assess progress and identify areas needing more attention.
  • Producing behavioural and attitudinal data not available from other sources.

The survey was meticulously designed to provide national-level estimates and insights for urban and rural areas, as well as for the six provinces: Torba, Sanma, Penama, Malampa, Shefa, and Tafea. The sample was selected in two stages, using data from the 2020 Vanuatu Population Census and the 2022 Vanuatu Agricultural Census.

The VBoS extends its gratitude to the Government of Vanuatu, the Government of New Zealand, UNICEF, UNFPA, and all households and fieldworkers who contributed to the success of the MICS 2023. Their dedication and support are instrumental in advancing the well-being of the people of Vanuatu.

The VBoS encourages all stakeholders to utilize the findings of the MICS, which provides critical data on child health, education, nutrition, and sanitation, to inform their work and contribute to a more prosperous future for Vanuatu. This comprehensive report is expected to serve as a vital tool for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders committed to addressing Vanuatu's development challenges and improving the quality of life for all citizens.
