This report provides an analysis of the Vanuatu 2020 census data. Where information is available, it also provides comparisons with data from earlier censuses.
1.1. Geographic setting Vanuatu consists of six provinces, Torba, Sanma, Penama, Malampa, Shefa and Tafea. The country is spread over an area of 612,300 km² in the South Pacific and has a total land area of 12,281 km². It stretches from Hiu Island up north to the Matthew and Hunter Islands down south and includes 83 main islands, of which about 63 are permanently inhabited. Port Vila, the capital, is located on the island of Efate in Shefa province. Efate is the most populated island, although Santo Island (Sanma province) is the biggest in terms of land area. Port Vila is 1,288 km due south east of Honiara, Solomon Islands; 1,071 km west of Suva, Fiji; and 2,394 km east of Cairns, Australia (see map). 1.2. Background This report is a collaborative effort between the Vanuatu Bureau of Statistics (VBS) and the Statistics for Development Division (SDD) of the Pacific Community (SPC).

Download Basic Tables Report - Volume 1 - Version 2 The National Population and Housing censuses (NPHC) are conducted every 10 years and is a critical exercise that provides the primary source of data that government requires for formulating and executing policies and programs aimed at sustainable socioeconomic and environmental development. It also provides a basis for the monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of said policies and programs. The NPHC collects, processes and disseminates detailed statistics on population, its composition, spatial distributions, characteristics and its organization in areas and groups throughout the country. This Volume 1 report is part of a series of reports that serve as a complete package of the Vanuatu 2020 National Population and Housing Census. The ‘Volume 1’ report provides administrative information and basic statistical tabulations of the Vanuatu 2020 National Population and Housing Census. The statistical information included in this report covers demographic, social and economic characteristics of the population and households in Vanuatu. It is published in this report to assist with informed national decision-making. Other volumes will contain basic and in-depth analysis reports are in the pipeline for the coming year that will help put the information from this major collection into further perspective. The 2020 National Population and Housing Census is the fifth full census of the population of Vanuatu since 1979. The 2020 Census was the second census conducted using Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) technology, with over 900 enumerators in the field in November 2020. The use of CAPI, first used in 2016 mini census, is using sophisticated software to reduce the time required for processing the data by more than half to ensure more timely results can be delivered to the people of Vanuatu, at the same time improving quality of the data collected. Furthermore, Volume 1 report of basic statistical tables represents the first time a full census tabulation report was compiled in country by dedicated VNSO staff. This document is a testament of the enhanced capacity of the staff of VNSO and reflects a maturity of skills of the same, which does the country proud and conveys hope for the future of our growing nation in the development of its internal human resource capacity. As Minister of Finance and Economic Management, I am privileged to have witnessed this during my tenure. Volume 1 report is an educational tool, produced for users’ knowledge and benefit. As the Minister responsible for official statistics, I encourage the use of the information contained in these basic tables to inform research, projects, programs and policies in order to help achieve a stable, sustainable, and prosperous Vanuatu over the next ten years. I also encourage that this report is to be used in conjunction with other statistical reports, in-depth census analytical reporting—additional educational tools—coming out in 2022 that will illustrate various social trends over the previous censuses to help make sense of the data presented in the tables you will find in this report. In the words of the late former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.” In accordance with the provisions of the Census Act [CAP 71] and the Statistics Act [CAP 83], it is my distinct pleasure to commend to the Republic of Vanuatu and her people, this volume 1 of the 2020 National Population and Housing Census.
